“…In the beginning, Lord, you founded the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands;
they will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like clothing; like a cloak you will roll them
up, and like clothing they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never end” (Heb 1:10-12).
up, and like clothing they will be changed. But you are the same, and your years will never end” (Heb 1:10-12).
The discovery of the Higgs boson particle, commonly referred to as the God Particle, on July 3rd,
2012, is considered to be one of the biggest and most ambitious scientific experiment in human history.
The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN is a 27-kilometre long underground experiment located on
the Swiss-French border near Geneva. It smashes subatomic particles together at vast speeds in an effort
to learn more about the fundamental building blocks that make up everything around you. Physicists
believe that this special subatomic particle allows all of the other particles in the universe to have mass
and come together to form, well, basically everything that is around us. Scientists say without these God
particles, atoms would have no integrity. That means there would be no chemical bonding, no stable
structures, no liquids or solids. That also can mean you and I would not have been.
This great discovery strengthens our faith and increases our belief in the providence of God. We are
reminded of the Word of God, “He has made known to us the mystery of his will, according to his good
pleasure that he set forth in Christ, as a plan for the fullness of time, to gather up all things in him,
things in heaven and things on earth” (Eph 1:10). God built such a tiny particle into the deepest part of
the creation. “For in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for
him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together” (Col 1:16-17). Is it not so
wonderful that our modern scientists have disclosed such a wonderful thing!
Creation has a purpose: Soon after the above discovery there were many comments by intellectuals.
One of them was that this universe has come into being by chance and there is no purpose to it. When we
read the book of Ecclesiastes we come across such an ideology. “Again I saw that under the sun the raceis not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor
favour to the skilful; but time and chance happen to them all” (Eccl 9:11). Scientists often talk about
luck, chance, and randomness. According to Quantum indeterminancy, there is a degree of a certain
randomness is built into the whole of universe. Now the discovery of God particles makes us understand
that the whole of Universe is unified and interconnected. Higgs Boson particles delicately holds the
universe together. “For he spoke, and it came to be; he commanded, and it stood firm” (Ps 33:9).I know a wealthy family with a mentally challenged child. The parents take care of the child with
utmost care and love. Their other five children are well educated and well settled in various parts of the
world. Because of this particular child parents cannot travel and are house bound. I was very amazed to
hear from the parents that the handicapped child is a blessing to the family. The reason they give is that
this child has made them more God-fearing, devout and prayerful. They say that they can boast of only
taking care of this helpless little angel God has put in their charge. “We know that all things worktogether for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose” (Rom 8:28).
God’s Purpose: We cannot understand God’s purpose for our life by starting with a focus on
ourselves. You see, we exist only because God wills that we exist. We were made by God and for God and
until we know that deep inside, life will never make sense. “For “In him we live and move and have ourbeing”; as even some of your own poets have said, “For we too are his offspring” (Acts 17:28). It is
only in a relationship with Jesus you discover who you are and purpose of our life. You may have many
achievements and accomplishments in life, but without a relationship with Jesus your life will lack
meaning and purpose. Why is that? Because your life is based on what you want to do, instead of what
God wants to do in you. Therefore listen to John the Baptist who came to welcome Jesus, “He went intoall the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it
is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, ‘The voice of one crying out in
the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight” (Luke 3:3-4).
Pramila had a fall from her scooter. It was not a major accident yet her knee bones were severely
damaged. Doctors expressed fears about her being completely healed in her knees even after operation.
She came to Divine Call Centre with tears in her eyes. She cried out to the Lord and prayed to Jesus to
have mercy on her little children and young husband. It was a miracle that she started feeling better and
later doctors performed the complicated knee operation. Even the doctors say that it is a miracle that she
is completely healed in her knees. Praise the Lord! “All things came into being through him, andwithout him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was
the light of all people” (Jn 1:3-4).
It took hundreds of years for scientists to accept with scientific proofs and logical conclusions to know
that the universe has come into being and is sustained by tiny particles called Higgs Boson. Whereas these
tiny particles come from God who is the Eternal Spirit. Human eyes could not behold Him. “He was inthe world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him… and his own
people did not accept him” (Jn 1:9-10). Scientists may take few more years but will come to a logical
conclusion that there is God from whom all things have come into being.
You have a purpose: If you and I are in this world, it is not by chance or luck, it is by the wise plan of
God. “For David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, died, was laid beside
his ancestors, and experienced corruption” (Acts 13:36). David fulfilled the purpose of God in his own
generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay. God has a purpose for every
generation. He chooses men and women obedient to Him to fulfill His purpose. St. Arnold Jansen,
founder of the society of the Divine Word (SVD) fulfilled the purpose of God to preach the Word of God
in places where Word of God was not preached or insufficiently preached. St. Joseph Freinandemetz the
first SVD missionary to China fulfilled the purpose of God by going to China and bringing the light of the
Word to millions of Chinese. God chose St. Thomas to proclaim the Good News to the people of Kerala
two thousand years ago. St. Francis Xavier was chosen in 16th century to preach the Kingdom of God in
Goa. The universe is not a result of chance and opportunity but rather the plan of God. In this plan of
God, you and I do have a place. That purpose is fulfill the purposes of God. St. Paul understood this plan
of God, “But when God, who had set me apart before I was born and called me through his grace, waspleased to reveal his Son to me, so that I might proclaim him among the Gentiles…” (Gal 1:15-16).
“Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit
of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah”
(1Sam 16:13). When Saul fell into sin and refused to repent, God chose a simple shepherd boy to fulfill
His purpose for that generation. When we become disobedient to fulfill God’s purpose God chooses
someone else. Though David received the anointing to be the king at the age of 17 and it was not till he
was thirty that he was made king of both Judah and Israel. In between, he went through many hardships
and difficulties. Yet yet he kept a close relationship with God. “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall notwant…Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the
house of the Lord my whole life long” (Ps 23:1.6).
A sixty year old person felt God is calling him to proclaim the Word of God. He has two grown up
sons who are settled in life. He attended many retreats and confirmed that this call is from God. Then he
approached the Archbishop of Mumbai to give him permission to be a preacher. The Archbishop prayed
over and decided to put him through three years of formation and then ordain him a permanent deacon.
Now he is attending the theology and scripture courses in the major seminary in Goregaon. You are also
called by God for a purpose. Do a retreat and ask the Holy Spirit to confirm your mission on earth. “…He chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.
He destined us for adoption as his children through Jesus Christ, according to the good pleasure of his
will” (Eph 1:4-5).
Prayer: We thank you Lord for the wonderful universe you have created and for the marvelous way
you have given me a place in eternal plans. May I never cease to be in touch with You and fulfill the
mission you have entrusted to me. Amen.
